Esteban Torres

Known to have a more soulful and deep sound, Esteban Torres has surprisingly not always played deep, soulful and funky house in the past. His introduction to electronic dance music was by way of the underground Goa Trance clubs in Tokyo, Japan in the early 90’s. After moving back to the United States in 1993 to attend college in San Antonio, Texas, Esteban discovered House Music at underground parties while visiting Austin, Texas. Not long after that he was introduced to the legendary club, The Cameo in San Antonio as well as the local House Nation parties that were put on by locals DJ Rise and JJ Lopez. Just after that, around 1996, Esteban Torres was given the opportunity to live in Germany and he immediately moved there in order to be in the middle of one of the largest electronic music scenes in the world.
His introduction to the music scene there in Germany was also through the Goa Trance parties in Munich and the surrounding areas. It was there that he befriended several local DJ’s that convinced him to start DJ’ing as well. Esteban experimented for several years with many different styles of music that included: hip-hop, drum & bass, techno, goa-trance, house music and big beat. His first gig was in a small disco at the hotel that he worked at that was for the American military soldiers stationed in Germany. There he was able to learn to DJ and experiment with several other music styles and learn the psychology of the dance floor by playing music that ranged from 70’s rock to disco and funk, as well as 80’s, hip-hop and pop. This was probably one of his most important weekly gigs, because it was here that he was able to learn how to read the crowd and understand the psychology of the dance floor, which is something that many people are not able to do these days.
In addition, while in Germany Esteban was also booked for parties that ranged from Goa Trance parties, House Music parties and even Hip-Hop events. In 2000, when he returned to the United States to finish college, he decided to take a break from his focus on DJing and instead concentrate on his education. It was at this time that he was again influenced by the deep & soulful house sounds at the House Nation parties in San Antonio. However, it was not until he moved to Houston and started Open House with Bobby Blyss and Alex C, that he finally decided it was time to focus on music once again, but this time strictly House Music.
Since arriving in Houston, Esteban Torres has had the opportunity to share the stage and open for several internationally known DJ’s and producers. Some of these include: Kaskade, Mark Farina, Julius Papp, Chuck Love, Danny Howells, Eddie Amador, Olivier Desmet and Stacy Kidd. In addition, Esteban Torres was a finalist at the Houston Press Ultra Music Spinoff and was nominated for the Houston Press City of Spin. He has also just embarked on the production side of his music, and is currently working on music with Alex C as well as Dave Wrangler. Esteban is also one of the latest additions to the Soular Grooves family of DJ’s in Houston. The Soular Grooves radio show has been on the air for 12 years and is featured on 90.1 FM every Saturday from 9:30 until 12 am. The show focuses on several different flavors of music that all have elements of soul, jazz and groove. You can hear Esteban spin live on the radio show along with the other Soular Grooves DJ’s on 90.1 FM.
